andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge

The andBeyond Phinda Forest Lodge is not located on the edge of the sand forest, but right in the middle of it. This original, sensitive habitat is now found only in small islands in northern KwaZulu-Natal and southern Mozambique – dense, cool, and with an almost cathedral-like tranquility. The suites in Zulu Zen style are perched on stilts among the trees and are connected by raised wooden walkways; floor-to-ceiling glass fronts dissolve the boundary between inside and outside. Here, the safari is different from that in the open savanna: quieter, slower, and focused on detail – a movement in the undergrowth, a call in the canopy, shy Suni antelopes and Red Duikers that disappear between the trunks.

Rooms

The lodge features 15 suites of 95 m² each, accommodating up to two guests, as well as a family suite for two adults and two children with separate sleeping areas of 65 m² each. All suites are air-conditioned and offer a generous sleeping area, an en-suite bathroom, a separate dressing area, and a private deck that extends the living space into the forest. Floor-to-ceiling glass fronts bring the canopy into the room, while natural materials, woven elements, and artisanal details reflect the Zulu Zen handwriting of the lodge. The suites are accessible via elevated walkways that keep the delicate forest floor untouched.

Culinary

Evenings begin at the sculptural fire pit, whose shape is inspired by the nest of a weaver bird and is woven from wattle – this is where people gather with a wide view for an aperitif. The bar, with its faceted surfaces and Zulu-inspired stools, is the second natural meeting point of the house. Dining is done according to mood and weather: as a pan-African dinner under the open sky in the traditional Boma or more peacefully on the lodge deck. A carefully curated selection of South African and international wines with suitable recommendations is served alongside.

Activities

Twice daily, guests go on game drives through the seven habitats of the reserve with experienced guides in an open 4x4 – Phinda is especially known for its cheetah sightings. Guided nature walks focus on the small stories of the bush, and Big Game walks with specialized rangers are available at an additional cost. With over 400 documented bird species, Phinda is also a paradise for birders. Private safaris, a photography vehicle, e-bike tours through the sand forest, a boat trip on the Mzinene River, and a night under the open sky can be arranged for an additional fee. A special chapter is the conservation work: rhino tracking on foot and participation in projects involving rhinos, pangolins, or elephants (at additional cost). Towards the coast, seasonal turtle tours await on the beaches of Maputaland, ocean safaris, beach outings, and diving in Sodwana Bay. Visits to Zulu communities and the projects of Wild Impact are also included. Within the lodge itself, an intimate spa with Healing Earth treatments, a fitness area, and a rim-flow pool with a sun deck and views of a nearby vlei invite relaxation.

Location

The Forest Lodge is one of six lodges in the andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve and the only one located in the rare sand forest. The reserve covers 29,866 hectares within the Munywana Conservancy in northern KwaZulu-Natal and combines seven different habitats – one of the largest habitat diversities among South Africa's private reserves. Where cheetahs now hunt through the grasslands and white rhinos move through dense Tamboti thickets, there was once farmland: Phinda is considered one of Africa's great rewilding stories. It is just a short drive to the untouched beaches and coral reefs of the Indian Ocean. Access is via the reserve's own airstrip, which is reserved for andBeyond guests, or by road from Durban, Richards Bay, or Johannesburg.
