Tanzania journeys we have travelled ourselves

A tailor-made Tanzania round trip starts with us at €6,000 per person plus international flights. Higher-end routes combining safari and island lie between €13,450 and €16,960 per person – our twelve-day luxury safari from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, for example. The main price drivers are lodge category, the share of domestic and charter flights between the parks, and the season. Your personal proposal itemises every service transparently.

For a first safari we recommend the north. The Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire lie close together, wildlife density is high and the roads between the parks are drivable – our nine-day Northern Tanzania route links exactly these three. If you have been on safari before, the south is the quieter counterpart: boat safaris on the Rufiji in Nyerere National Park, walking safaris and night drives in Ruaha. It asks for more time – our journey The Wild South and Zanzibar runs twelve days.

Eight days is the minimum. That is enough to link the northern circuit of Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti without turning too many days into pure driving days. With twelve to fifteen days the south or Zanzibar fits in as well. Our longer routes sit in exactly that range: twelve days from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, fifteen days for the Great Migration with a finish by the sea.

Yes – Tanzania is one of the most accessible safari countries in Africa. You travel throughout with a guide and vehicle and never have to navigate yourself, the non-stop flight from Frankfurt takes just under eleven hours, and the time difference is one to two hours depending on the season, so you arrive without jet lag. One point sets Tanzania apart from Namibia or South Africa: it is a malaria area, on the mainland and on Zanzibar. Plan a travel-medicine consultation four to six weeks before departure. According to the German Federal Foreign Office there are no compulsory vaccinations when arriving directly from Germany. For a first visit we recommend the Northern Tanzania route.

Yes, with one caveat. The short flight, the small time difference and the fact that all game drives are guided make Tanzania workable for families, and alternating safari days with beach days on Zanzibar keeps the rhythm comfortable for children. The caveat is malaria prophylaxis, which belongs in an early conversation with a travel physician when children are travelling.
