Thonga Beach Lodge
Nestled in the wooded dunes of Mabibi, on one of the most remote coastal sections of South Africa, lies the Thonga Beach Lodge. There is no road that leads directly here, no neighbors and no lights on the horizon – only wide, deserted beaches, an intact coral reef off the coast, and the constant sound of the Indian Ocean. The lodge is entirely within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Those seeking barefoot luxury, true seclusion, and a sea that remains largely untouched will find the perfect conclusion to a KwaZulu-Natal trip here.

Rooms
Twelve freestanding suites are spread out extensively in the coastal dune forest and are connected by wooden walkways – each placed so that you see and hear nothing from the neighbors. Thatched roofs, bright natural tones, wood, and plenty of daylight define the decor, which remains deliberately simple and adapted to the surroundings. There are Forest View Rooms with a view into the green canopy, Ocean View Rooms with a view over the Indian Ocean, family rooms, and a honeymoon suite with a particularly prominent location. Each suite has its own veranda – the best spot for morning coffee.
Culinary
Meals are served in the open main area among the trees, with a view of the sea – or upon request as a private dinner on the beach. The cuisine focuses on fresh fish, seasonal ingredients, and an uncomplicated, honest touch; the manageable group size allows for individual wishes to be accommodated. At sunset, one gathers at the barefoot bar for a cocktail before dinner under the starry sky. Full board with all meals and most activities is part of the concept.
Activities
The reef begins just a few meters from the beach: snorkeling and diving are among the highlights, with excellent visibility and the dive sites barely visited. Between November and February, you will be accompanied in the evenings by the rangers when loggerhead turtles and leatherback turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs – later in the season, the hatchlings emerge. In addition, there are kayak tours on Lake Sibaya, South Africa's largest freshwater lake, guided walks through the dune forest, birdwatching, visits to the neighboring Thonga village, and between June and November the chance to see humpback whales and dolphins off the coast.
Location
Thonga Beach Lodge is located on the Maputaland Coast in the far northeast of South Africa, not far from the border with Mozambique and entirely within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. The journey is part of the experience: The last part leads over sandy tracks and can only be managed with a 4x4 vehicle – the lodge organizes daily transfers from Sodwana Bay, which take about an hour. Those who prefer can arrive by small aircraft. Due to its proximity to the Phinda Private Game Reserve and Lake St. Lucia, Thonga can be ideally planned as the conclusion of a safari tour through KwaZulu-Natal.
